August 8, 2024 - Two Weeks to Takeoff & A New Goal

Over the last week or so, I've hiked Pena Adobe (again), the South Fork of the American River from Salmon Falls Bridge, and Castle Peak.  The Castle Peak trail was extra good because it was up at a little altitude (7,000 - 9,000 feet) and it was nice and steep, similar to what I'll be doing on the Tour du Mont Blanc.  Instead of 2 hours of climbing though, I'll be doing it for 7 or 8 hours!

I leave for Switzerland on August 21, in just two weeks!  I’ve achieved my training goal of climbing 20,000 feet but not my goal of hiking 200 miles (yet).  I think I’ll up my climbing goal to 25,000 feet.  Once I get to Switzerland I’ll do a little more hiking before I start the Tour du Mont Blanc, so I still have a good chance of achieving both goals before August 29.

Here are the running totals for my training since July 1:

Distance: 160 miles (248 Km) (goal: 200 miles)
Ascent:  22,989 ft. 7,007 m)  (new goal: 25,000 ft.)

On the hike down from Castle Peak I took a little detour so that I could hike a couple of miles of the Pacific Crest Trail.  I didn't see any other hikers though.

  What a great hike!  The Tour du Mont Blanc was spectacular. It was hard but I was never concerned that I couldn’t make it. I never got sick or had any physical issues (other than somewhat sore feet) and for the most part had pretty good weather.  I feel very fortunate to be healthy enough to do this.   The Alps seem very different from other mountains I’ve been to in that they are so vertical.  Spires jut up many thousands of feet out of relatively low valleys. And they have glaciers!, at least for now.   Pictures from the 1990’s show the glaciers WAY larger than they are today.  It is very sad how fast they are disappearing.  Inside Mer de Glace glacier  Here are some final actual TMB statistics (just because I like that sort of thing) from my watch recordings. September 7, 2024 up, up, down, down, down, down! C’est fini!

I finished the Tour du Mont Blanc today with a hike up to Col du Brévent and a descent all the way down to Les Houches where I started on August 29. The ascent was not insignificant at 2,146 feet, but today was all about the descent. It was 5,552 feet!  Much of it was very steep and rocky.  I’ll make one more post on this blog with some last thoughts. Thanks everyone for following along with me! August 23, 2024 Genèva, Switzerland

  At the Sacramento airport (notice the  Tuleyome  travel T) I’m in Switzerland!  I arrived yesterday with no problems with one tiny exception. When I was sitting down waiting for my first flight I noticed that the strap on the backpack I was planning to use for 100 miles of hard hiking was literally holding on by a thread!  A $5 airport sewing kit and some sloppy sewing fixed that right up.  I think I’ll carry the sewing kit with me though… Before  After After arriving in Genèva I did lots of walking around town in a jet lag haze but it was interesting. The hotels give tourists a city bus pass for the length of your stay. That also includes some nice boats that cross the lake from one part of the city to another   I’m pretty sure that’s Mont Blanc in the distance. It looks pretty intimidating!
