September 4, 2024 Champex to Trient

There are lots of pictures I forgot to take and don’t realize it until it’s too late. Yesterday I hiked past the beautiful Lake Campex and sat for an hour at a cafe right next to it with some new Scottish friends, and never took a picture. Every night I’ve been staying in interesting places, dormitories mostly, and as soon as I leave I think “I should have taken a picture of the bedroom or the dining room”. They’re such dynamic places with backpacks strewn all over or people engaged in conversations with friends they just met.  I have my own mental pictures, but unfortunately, I can’t share them with you because I forgot to take the pictures. 

Today’s forest trail

The hike today was wonderful as always. The big decision was whether to take the high “extreme” trail variant. There was a possibility of rain and dense cloud so I decided not to take it. One guy I talked to said that it wasn’t too bad, it cleared up enough to get a view and he saw an ibex (an alpine mountain goat with big curved horns).  Another guy said that it was REALLY hard, that the trail was so steep that he had to scramble using his hands and it took an extra 4 hours. 

The trail I took was through a steep forest. It was really enjoyable and not too hard (10 miles, 3,500 ft ascent, 4,000 ft decent). It didn’t rain until after I got to my destination, Trient. However, I really want to see an ibex!

I finished the Tour du Mont Blanc today with a hike up to Col du Brévent and a descent all the way down to Les Houches where I started on August 29. The ascent was not insignificant at 2,146 feet, but today was all about the descent. It was 5,552 feet!  Much of it was very steep and rocky.  I’ll make one more post on this blog with some last thoughts. Thanks everyone for following along with me! September 9, 2024. Final Thoughts

  What a great hike!  The Tour du Mont Blanc was spectacular. It was hard but I was never concerned that I couldn’t make it. I never got sick or had any physical issues (other than somewhat sore feet) and for the most part had pretty good weather.  I feel very fortunate to be healthy enough to do this.   The Alps seem very different from other mountains I’ve been to in that they are so vertical.  Spires jut up many thousands of feet out of relatively low valleys. And they have glaciers!, at least for now.   Pictures from the 1990’s show the glaciers WAY larger than they are today.  It is very sad how fast they are disappearing.  Inside Mer de Glace glacier  Here are some final actual TMB statistics (just because I like that sort of thing) from my watch recordings. August 23, 2024 Genèva, Switzerland

  At the Sacramento airport (notice the  Tuleyome  travel T) I’m in Switzerland!  I arrived yesterday with no problems with one tiny exception. When I was sitting down waiting for my first flight I noticed that the strap on the backpack I was planning to use for 100 miles of hard hiking was literally holding on by a thread!  A $5 airport sewing kit and some sloppy sewing fixed that right up.  I think I’ll carry the sewing kit with me though… Before  After After arriving in Genèva I did lots of walking around town in a jet lag haze but it was interesting. The hotels give tourists a city bus pass for the length of your stay. That also includes some nice boats that cross the lake from one part of the city to another   I’m pretty sure that’s Mont Blanc in the distance. It looks pretty intimidating!
